The Infrastructure to Experience the World

I’ve long believed that we were never meant to stay in one place. The world is big, and as humans we are meant to explore it. A desire for adventure has fueled me since my teen years when I enrolled in online high school and, for the first time, had the freedom to be anywhere. I travelled across the United States, bouncing between national parks like Yosemite, Zion and Glacier –– and far beyond our borders, from Iceland to Japan.

Fast forward to 2020. Like so many others, I yearned to escape the mental and physical staleness of living in lockdown. I became more nomadic again, but this time was different. I spent weeks on end working from remote and beautiful corners of the country, places I likely never would have visited if the pandemic hadn’t forced me to look further inward and travel further outward. I knew I was not alone in my desire to jump head first into this “new normal.”

I soon realized the way people want to experience the world has changed forever, but the infrastructure to explore it hasn’t caught up with this new reality. It was early 2021, and I went to a cabin in Colorado to decompress after stepping down as CEO from my previous company. The place was disappointing. It looked nothing like the photos online, the internet didn’t work and the beds were uncomfortable. The trip was supposed to be a relaxing escape, but it felt like the opposite. There had to be a better way –– an entirely new kind of travel experience that would allow you to seamlessly transition between work and play.

The idea for Wander was born. By owning the entire end-to-end customer experience — from operating the homes to the booking to the smart home technology –– we could iterate towards perfection.

Wander is different because we operate 100% of the homes on our platform, which means we have complete control over the quality (high), the technology (smart), and the locations (inspiring). With our app, guests have total home operation at their fingertips –– from unlocking the door to setting the temperature to turning on the fireplace to adjusting the lights. We offer transparent pricing with no hidden fees and one out-the-door nightly rate you can seamlessly split with friends or family.

We’re launching today with properties in Lake Tahoe, Mendocino County, Port Orford, and Bandon Dunes, Oregon, and this is just the beginning. We’ve closed $7 million in initial funding led by Redpoint Ventures, with participation from Authentic Ventures and top angels.

Our mission is to help people find their happy place. To build a network of thousands of homes across the globe you can access with the tap of a button. To create special spaces for moments and memories with the people you care about most. To build the infrastructure to truly experience the world the way we were meant to.

We want to give people the opportunity to join us on this mission. For a short time, you can become a Founding Member for $100 and receive a host of perks including a $100 credit toward your first stay, a limited edition Founding Member hoodie, access to new properties before everyone else and much more. The journey isn’t going to be easy but we have the most incredible people, investors and community of supporters who believe in this better future.

We’re going places –– and we hope you’ll join us.
