About the Area

Nestled just four miles inside the southern entrance of Yosemite National Park is the charming and historic town of Wawona. Located at the base of Chilnualna Falls, the second-highest vertical-drop waterfall in Yosemite, and home to the principal trailheads into the southern Yosemite wilderness, Wawona is also the closest town to the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias.

Wawona has the feel of a small town while remaining full of activity. More than 160 residents, including Yosemite National Park employees, live in Wawona and can often be seen gathering at the community center, playing pickup basketball at the elementary school, jogging along picturesque trails, or simply walking dogs and strollers through the winding residential streets.

The historic Wawona Swinging Bridge features one of the best natural water slides in the park. The historic village offers docent-led experiences, stagecoach rides, horseback riding, and summer barn dances, while the Wawona Meadow Loop provides year-round opportunities for riparian meadow wildlife viewing.

Wawona was known to the local Native American Miwok people as Pallachun, meaning “a good place to stay.” The town is located entirely within Yosemite National Park and sits along the South Fork of the wild and scenic Merced River on State Route 41, the main highway connecting Fresno to Yosemite Valley.

In 1855, Galen Clark, who helped secure preservation legislation for the Mariposa Grove and what later became Yosemite National Park, settled in the Wawona area and established a tourist rest stop and modest ranch. He later sold the property, which became the historic Wawona Hotel and resort. The Wawona post office was established in 1878 and was originally called Clark's Station.

The Redwoods in Yosemite features more than 120 vacation rental homes, all located within Wawona. Every home is within walking distance of the area's attractions and surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of Yosemite National Park.
