You're staying in Sunmor Estates, one of Palm Springs' most intact mid-century modern neighborhoods. Built between 1955 and the early 1960s by Alexander Construction Company, the tract drew on an unusual mix of talent for one small subdivision: Donald Wexler and Richard Harrison designed the earliest homes, including this one, and William Krisel designed the later Alexander homes. The result is a quiet, architecturally consistent pocket of the city that still looks close to how it did the year it was built, with post-and-beam rooflines, walls of glass, and low profiles set against the San Jacinto Mountains.
The neighborhood sits just west of Palm Springs International Airport, a history you can still see in a few surviving circular concrete tie-downs from the site's earlier use for military aircraft. Ironwood Park and Escena Golf Club are both close by, and downtown Palm Springs, with its restaurants, galleries, and the Aerial Tramway, is about a 10-minute drive.
It's a residential, low-key area. No bars or shops on the block so very quiet, but real 1950s and '60s architecture all around it, not a themed version of it.
Palm Springs is walkable in pockets, especially downtown, but most guests choose to rent a car or rely on Uber and Lyft for the stay. The city is compact: almost everything in Palm Springs proper, restaurants, shops, galleries, the Aerial Tramway, is within about a 5-minute drive of the house, so a car is a convenience here, not a necessity.
