About the property

The Captains’ Cottage at Alki is a 1923 Craftsman offering the chance to step into one of Seattle’s most coveted lifestyles: life by the beach. Tucked along a quiet seaside street with a village-like rhythm, this nautical retreat pairs the charm of Seattle’s yesteryear with a chef’s kitchen, king & queen bedrooms, a fenced yard and French doors opening to a deck overlooking Puget Sound. Walk to Alki’s beaches, cafés & waterfront dining, or stay home and let the salt air come to you.

Built in 1923, The Captains’ Cottage carries the warmth and character of Seattle’s yesteryear while thoughtful updates bring the home comfortably into today.

Tucked along a quiet residential street near Alki, the setting has the easy, neighborly feeling of a Southern California beach village, only here it is unmistakably Pacific Northwest.

Saltwater & evergreens. Fog-softened mornings. Ferries and sailboats moving across Puget Sound. Driftwood beaches, long summer evenings, moody winter skies & that unmistakable scent of the sea carried in on the breeze.

Late in the afternoon, neighbors gather in front of their homes to catch the last sunbeams of the day, sip wine, let the dogs play & allow conversations to linger a little longer than planned. It has a rare village-like quality, the feeling of a real neighborhood by the sea where the water is woven into everyday life.

Inside, original hardwood floors and Craftsman character are paired with comfortable furnishings and nautical details inspired by the home’s owners, two ship captains whose connection to the water naturally finds its way into the cottage.

The living room is cozy and relaxed, designed for putting your feet up after an afternoon along the shoreline, curling up for a movie on a rainy Seattle evening or simply enjoying a quiet night at home.

At the heart of the cottage is a beautifully updated chef’s kitchen with quartz countertops, generous cabinetry, a gas range and new stainless steel appliances.

Expansive French doors are what truly transform this space.

Open them wide and the kitchen flows almost seamlessly onto the deck, creating an easy indoor-outdoor living space with Puget Sound as the backdrop. Morning coffee finds its way outside, dinner moves naturally between the kitchen and deck, and on breezy days the scent of saltwater drifts up from the shoreline.

Beyond the deck is a fully fenced yard, giving pups room to roam and adding another outdoor space to enjoy.

One of the hardest decisions here may simply be whether to go out or stay in.

Walk to the beach for a morning stroll, wander out for coffee, spend an afternoon along the shoreline, linger over dinner at one of Alki’s waterfront restaurants or stay for sunset.

Or stay home.

Cook something wonderful in the kitchen, throw open the French doors, settle onto the deck and let the coastal breeze come to you.

The Captains’ Cottage is more than a furnished rental; it is an opportunity to step into one of Seattle’s most coveted lifestyles: life on Alki.

Homes this close to the water are treasured and rarely available, but for a little while, this one becomes yours. If you have ever imagined what it might be like to live by the beach, this is your chance to try the lifestyle on and see how it suits you.

Morning walks along the Sound, coffee at neighborhood cafés, barefoot afternoons by the beach, sunset dinners & a cottage waiting at the end of the day.

You may leave wishing you could stay a little longer, but perhaps that is part of the magic, discovering that seaside life in Seattle may be closer than you imagined.

Sleeping configuration

The cottage offers two true bedrooms, each with its own personality and comfortable place to retreat at the end of the day.

The Captain’s Suite: Primary bedroom with a king bed, warm hardwood floors, room-darkening shades, ceiling fan, soft linens and a portable A/C unit for added comfort during Seattle’s warmer summer days.

The First Mate’s Suite: Queen bedroom with hardwood floors, ceiling fan, soft natural light and comfortable bedding, creating a peaceful second retreat for another couple, family member or guest.

The layout works beautifully for two couples, a small family or longer stays where everyone appreciates having a real bedroom of their own.

The Neighborhood

Alki is one of those Seattle neighborhoods where the water shapes the way people live.

The shoreline, beaches, restaurants, cafés and walking paths become part of the everyday rhythm rather than somewhere you simply visit.

Start the morning with coffee and a walk along Puget Sound. Spend an afternoon exploring the beach, wander out for dinner by the water and linger for sunset before returning to the quieter residential streets beyond the waterfront.

The cottage sits among permanent residences, giving the immediate neighborhood a warm, lived-in quality rather than the feeling of a vacation complex.

On beautiful evenings you may see neighbors outside catching the last light, friends stopping to talk and dogs playing nearby.

There is something reminiscent of a Southern California beach village in its easy rhythm, but the scenery belongs completely to Seattle.

Evergreens. Foggy mornings. Boats crossing the Sound. Driftwood along the shore. And Northwest summer evenings when the daylight seems determined not to end.

For a little while, the beach becomes your morning walk, the cafés become your neighborhood spots & The Captains’ Cottage becomes the place you come home to.

Guest access

Guests have private access to the cottage, deck and fully fenced yard, except for any locked owner or housekeeping storage areas.

The washer & dryer are located in the basement and are available for guest use.

Other things to note

The Captains’ Cottage is a century-old 1923 Craftsman. Part of its charm comes from the character and personality of an older Seattle home, thoughtfully combined with modern updates where they matter most.

The home is located on a quiet residential street surrounded primarily by permanent residents. We ask guests to enjoy the neighborhood with the same care and consideration they would give their own.

The Captain’s Suite includes a portable A/C unit. The home does not have whole-house central air conditioning.

The yard is fully fenced, making it especially convenient for guests traveling with pups. As with any fenced outdoor space, we recommend checking the yard and gates before allowing pets to roam freely.

The washer & dryer are located downstairs in the basement.

The home enjoys views toward Puget Sound, but it is not a direct waterfront property.

Whether your days are spent exploring Alki or doing very little at all, the magic of this cottage is in getting to experience the neighborhood as more than a destination.

For a little while, you get to live here.

You’ll have private access to the home during your stay, offering a comfortable and peaceful space to settle in and feel at ease.

From the moment you arrive, the home welcomes you through its private entrance, with access to all main living areas, including the open-concept kitchen, dining, and living spaces, as well as the cozy theater room, bedrooms, and third-floor den. The fully fenced backyard and outdoor dining area are also yours to enjoy, creating space for both quiet mornings and shared evenings.

The home includes access to the laundry room, thoughtfully tucked away for convenience, along with all in-home amenities designed to support a seamless stay.

You may come across a locked closet or storage area during your stay, which is reserved for owners and housekeeping. Everything else in the home is prepared and available for your use.

Parking details and access instructions will be shared prior to arrival to ensure your check-in feels smooth and easy from the start.
