Bugs and Insects
Cape San Blas is a natural coastal area, so guests may occasionally notice mosquitoes, no-see-ums (tiny biting midges), and biting flies—especially around dusk or calm days. Insect activity is normal outdoors and varies with weather. Using repellent, keeping doors closed, and avoiding standing water helps reduce them.
Roaches and Palmetto Bugs
Large “palmetto bugs” (Florida roaches) sometimes appear in coastal climates, even in clean homes. They are mostly harmless and often come in from outdoors. Keeping food sealed and lights off at night helps prevent them.
Rats and Mice
Like most beach areas, small rodents may appear if food is left out or doors are open. They can be attracted by crumbs or trash. They’re uncommon in well-kept homes but can carry germs and chew packaging. Store food securely and dispose of garbage regularly to discourage them.
Wildlife and Critters
The area may have lizards, frogs, and the occasional snake in dunes or vegetation. These animals avoid people and are part of the local ecosystem. Staying on walkways and keeping outdoor lights on at night can discourage them from coming close.
Please do not feed or handle any wildlife, and always keep food, trash, and pet items indoors to help maintain the balance of the local environment. Pets should remain leashed and supervised outdoors, as coastal vegetation and dunes can harbor insects or small wildlife.
Notice on Beach Construction & Temporary Closures
St. Joseph Peninsula (Cape San Blas Breakwater) will continue a shoreline restoration and nourishment project beginning mid to late February 2026, with dredging expected to start in March 2026 and submerged breakwater construction planned for late March through early April.
During this time, portions of the beach may be temporarily closed, and guests may see construction equipment, pipelines, and fenced work zones along the shoreline. Sand ramps will be installed to maintain beach and Gulf access where possible.
Please note that construction timelines may shift, and minor disruptions to the beach experience are possible while work is underway. We appreciate your understanding and ask that you follow all posted signage and safety guidance.
